#10: A picture of something that was created by you

This one from the list was difficult for me. I am not very artsy and I feel like I don't do anything truly original. So, creating something seems like a stretch... but then this term came to me: The Velveteen Rabbit Effect. Yes, I made this up. I guess you could say I created it...and I created it because of this:
This is kitty and I created The Velveteen Rabbit Effect with her. What is The Velveteen Rabbit Effect you ask? Well, to me it's the personal experience with these words from Margery Williams:

"What is REAL?" asked the Velveteen Rabbit one day... "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?""Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When [someone] loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept.
"Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand... once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always.”
― Margery Williams, The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real

Kitty was given to me on my 4th birthday and except for a scare in 1982 when she went missing, she has been with me through it all and I made her Real.
I suppose I could feel embarrassed  that I kept her in my pillow all through high school
or that I took her to college... and I could lie and say that I went to my parents basement to find kitty, but really, she sits on top of our alarm clock in our bedroom.
Kitty is a part of the family--a part of me.
The Velveteen Rabbit Effect has been in the making for 37 years and counting...I have loved kitty's fur off, I have sewn on new eyes...but she is Real and it lasts for always.

  1. This kind of just brought tears to my eyes!

  2. I just had to go back and read it again! I love the idea of loving something so much you make it real. Or of being loved so much that you are finally real...
Sigh. I'm gonna go read it again now.
